Immunodeficiency is a medical condition in which a person’s immune system is incapable of functioning correctly or does not work at all.  A person may suspect that they have this condition when serious infections occur in their body. Which with treatments, pharmacists don’t get immediate cures.

The incorrect functioning of the immune system causes the development of autoimmune and allergic diseases or neoplasms. So we must bear in mind that immunodeficiencies can divide into:

  •  Primary: derive defects from birth (genes) and are classified according to the part of the immune system affected:

Humoral, related to B lymphocytes, which are a type of white blood cell that produces antibodies. (Most frequent case)

Cellular, related to T lymphocytes, another type of white blood cell that helps detect and destroy foreign or abnormal cells.

Phagocytes; are free cells present in the blood and destroy microorganisms.

  • Secondary: they derive from infections or pharmacological treatments. They appear as infections that repeat continuously, increasingly intense, and are prolonged. It can witness by a severe state of malnutrition, drug therapies, tumors (leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma), HIV, viral hepatitis, or absence of spleen (asplenia).

Importance of being aware of immunodeficiencies:

Immunodeficiencies can be the consequence of almost any long-term grave illness. Diabetes leads to immunodeficiency as an example; due to the inadequate functioning of the white blood cells (leukocytes). When sugar concentration in the blood is high (hyperglycemia).

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is an infection that causes the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).  Same, malnutrition due to the absence of all nutrients or one of them deteriorates the immune system: when the weight falls below 80 percent,  the immune system is usually affected;  if it drops to 70 percent,  it becomes harmful insufficiency health.
