Diseases that attack the immune system

Maintaining a strong and resilient immune system is necessary to prevent any infection today.

Cristina Tesare

The immune system is our body’s natural defense mechanism against infections. In charge of attacking bacteria or germs or invaders that put our health at risk. This mechanism is made up of many cells and organs that work with each other to protect us.

What happens when our body detects foreign organisms? Our immune system works to identify and eliminate them since it generates the necessary antibodies to respond to the threats that expose our immune mechanism.

Now how do antibodies work? Simple, the antibodies neutralize the toxins -invasive organisms-, destroying themselves and creating another group of organisms that activate the immune system again to avoid future relapses under the same antigenic pattern.

Likewise, there are also different types of immunity that attack our body, points out the information portal KidsHealth from The Nemours Foundation in Jacksonville, Florida:

  1. Adaptive: we develop it throughout our lives as we deal with diseases and get vaccinated.
  2. Innate: we are all born with this, it is of general protection, that is, it works as a barrier so that bacteria and germs do not attack.
  3. Passive: this is a type of protection provided since it comes from an external source (antibiotics or treatments) and does not last long.

However, there are cases in which the immune system does not work properly, in this scenario our mechanism is not able to distinguish the own cells from the external ones. Causing the antibodies that are produced to attack our tissues and cells.

This process is known as “autoimmunity” and it causes the immune system to have a wrong response, thus unleashing self-reactive lymphocytes (white blood cells) that contribute to various autoimmune diseases.

Which autoimmune diseases are the most common?

  1. Immunodeficiencies:

They are serious and repeated infections that put our lives at serious risk, since our body cannot attack them. These infections spread through our system, damaging organs, tissues, cells, and arteries.

Among the most common immunodeficiencies we have:

– Complement deficiencies.

– DiGeorge syndrome (velocardiofacial).

– Job syndrome (hyperimmunoglobulin E).

– Leukocyte adhesion defects.

– Wiscott-Aldrich syndrome (primary immunodeficiency).

Other less “harmless” diseases that ultimately have a greater weight in health are:

– Allergic asthma.

– Allergies.

– Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA).

– Lupus.

– Leprosy.

– Myositis.

-Multiple sclerosis.

-Among other.

That is why taking care of our immune system is key today…
